Mayers And Golsalves Battle To The Finish In
Karting
Reigning
Champion Driver Ryan Gonsalves (right) was put to the test
this Sunday, at the 10th Round of the Barbados Karting Association
(BKA) 2003 Frutee Championship, when he came up against young
ace rally driver Roger Mayers, 'returning to his roots' driving
his Birel kart for the first time in 18 months. Gonsalves
was put on notice by Mayers, who set fastest qualifying time
of 36.63 seconds and went on to win the opening race of the
premier 310 lb class by a comfortable margin.
Gonsalves stormed back to take the following races in his
Vitamalt/Becks Motorsport Deavinsons Sprint
kart and end the day in first place with 96 points. Engine
troubles late in the day could not prevent Mayers from finishing
in second position with 83 points. Despite not being entirely
happy with the kart setup, Matthew Staffner (right) continued
to impress to finish third with 63 points in his Structural
Systems Deavinson Sprint kart. Female driver Krystal
Branch was forced to watch the hotly contested event from
the pits after loosing the engine in the opening race.
In
the Sportsman class, Orry Hunt (left) celebrated his return
after a 1-race layoff to make a clean sweep of the 270 lb
category. Driving the ADO Trading Wright kart
well prepared by his father and local rally veteran Don Hunte,
Orry was undaunted despite no-nonsense charges by Dane Skeete
and a display of flamboyant passing by Dane McConney who finished
2nd and 3rd with 79 and 76 points respectively. Despite blowing
an engine on the qualifying round and a collision in Race
1, Connor Roach continued his heroics to finish all races
with his newly imported Gold F355 Kart now sold by Automotive
Art.
Brett
Judd (left) drove with commitment to keep his Tracey kart
ahead of the talented Maloney brothers and win the 125cc shifter-kart
category with 96 points. Sean Maloney finished second with
82 points and Stuart Maloney finished third with 78 points,
both driving Maranello Shifter karts, that demonstrated great
promise when they set track times two seconds faster than
event winner Paul Bourne, at last weekend's Barbados Rally
Club Bushy Park Super Special.
The BKA Frutee Championship 2003 season draws to a close
with the final round number 11 scheduled for November 23,
at the Bushy Park racing circuit.
