Roger
"His Hottness" Mayers won his second event for the
year, as he won the BRC's (Barbados Rally Club) Tarmac Rally
held on April 4th. Behind the wheel of his MacEnearny Quality/
M&M Racing Ford Focus WRC, Mayers drove well as he took
5 out of 12 stage wins with an overall time of 20:56.50. Mayers
had an 8-seond lead at the lunch break and won by 6.65 seconds.
Mayers' Focus was definitely on-song and Mayers didn't put
a foot wrong as he put down a spectacular drive.
Second
place went to sideways specialist Trevor "Electric Micey"
Manning. Driving hard and determined, Manning was cool and
confident as he piloted his Sunbeach/ Kerridge/Thorogood Racing
Shoes/Simpson Motors Rally Team Mitsubishi Lancer Evo V to
a well-earned result. Manning took 3 stage wins. Manning was
spectacular at the Diamond Corner and Dark Hole stages, sliding
and scandying his Evo at will, thrilling the crowds who assembled
to watch the action.
Barry
Mayers in the M&M Racing Super 1600 Starlet was simply
stunning, as he placed 3rd overall and took group honours
in Group MO. Mayers was aggressive in his approach to the
stages, and he was well rewarded. His car control was flawless,
and this showed in the times and results, as he even placed
higher than some of the four-wheel drive machinery.
Barry Gale placed 4th and was top in Group N. With aggressive
lines and controlled skill, Gale continued his good form.
His Sunbeach/ Kerridge/Wurkz/Courts/Simpson Motors Rally Team
Evo VI worked well throughout the day, and all Gale had to
concentrate on was driving it to a good result.
Sean
Gill powered the Sunbeach/ Kerridge/Simpson Motors Rally Team
Suzuki Ignis to 5th and won Group M6. The Ignis was yet again
dominant (more or less until the last couple of stages), rocketing
through the stages. Gill is continuing his good form, and
is looking to be yet another front-runner for Driver Of The
Year.
This event was not without incident, however. Paul "The
Surfer" Bourne ran out of gas on SS11. This is the same
cruel fate which befell Bourne during the Rally Barbados.
Bourne was locked in an intense three-way battle with Roger
Mayers and Trevor Manning. However, that incident put paid
to Bourne's chances of snatching a victory. Another casualty
was Roger "The Sheriff" Skeete. A left-side drive
shaft snapped on his Texaco/Carib/Michel/MacEnearney Quality
Ford Escort Cosworth WRC, causing his retirement. Shaun Alleyne
retired after he experienced mechanical problems with his
differential. The Mitsubishi Lancer Evo III of Peter Thompson
developed an engine knocking problem and that spelled retirement
for him.
The event took drivers though 12 competitive Special Stages,
located at Diamond Corner, Orange Hill and Dark Hole with
Vaucluse Raceway being the main service area. With 2 runs
at each stage during the morning and after lunch, with the
post-lunch session seeing the stages being run in the reverse
direction. The event was well-run and was generally problem-free.
Even though there weren't that many cars, the event didn't
lack any excitement whatsoever.
