Saturday
Car
started spluttering really bad on the way to VRW. Found out
that the fuel tank was full of brown muck, like chocolate
cake mix. Probably from the car sitting down idle for so many
years. Got that fixed, but missed the first runs.
On Noel's first run we beat the turbo Cosworth to the start
line... something we never expected to do!!
On my first run I grabbed the vertical handbrake instead
of the gear stick... big spin. Then I spun again at the hairpin.
Nerves really. It was my first ever driving in any speed competition.
Next runs were ok. Noel's best was 2:36 and mine was 2:45.
We had decided not to push the car... saving it for next weekend.
Sunday
After a late-night alignment at Auto Link, Noel took the car
for a quick drive. The bonnet flew up and broke the windscreen...
AGAIN! Another one was located and fitted in the wee hours.
Drove cautiously again. The car felt soo much better now
that it had a proper alignment done.
Noel's
first run he spun and clipped a tyre wall. Front bumper came
off, so we stopped cause it was dragging under the car. During
one of the knock-out rounds the car was really down on power.
Noel thought maybe he was in 5th instead of 3rd, but it would
not rev out properly and started bogging down and spluttering
again. Discovered the fuel filter gave up the ghost, so it
was decided to call it quits before any further damage was
done.
Looking forward to next weekend. It's a learning experience.
Thanks to Jason King and Barry Gilkes for their help in
getting the car back in shape (it's been put down for about
6 years).
Thanks to Carmax and Auto Link for the use of their facilities.
Thanks to my wife for her tremendous patience and understanding
over the past few weeks.
