Location: The Wakefield Watersplash |

The
watersplash was one of the best stages to be at in the JMC/Petcom
Rally. It has a reputation for wrecking cars… oh and it looks
good too. Quite a few cars choked and sputtered as they were
drowned in the water. We were told that a dam further upstream
could be used to regulate the depth of the water. On race day,
the depth was measured at 1.5 feet. When the teams prepared
their paces notes the day before, it was approximately 2 feet
deep. This probably explains why all the Bajan drivers drove
so cautiously (slug pace) through the water. Jeffery Panton
on the other hand had different plans. He probably prepared
his pace notes when it was dry. Panton showed utter disrespect
towards the watercourse that is known for ripping off bumpers,
tearing off sump guards and drowning engines.
He left spectators in awe as he hurled the Celica GT-Four through
the water at top speed like a fish through water. Photographers
were scampering for cover. Would you believe this is the same
man that damaged his Celica (now in the hands of Roger Hill)
years ago at the same stage? Was it time for revenge?
